Why a Root Canal May Be Recommended
Root canal therapy (also referred to as endodontics) can prevent the need to remove a tooth that has developed an internal infection.
By removing the decay and bacteria from the inner parts of the tooth and roots, your dentist can help halt the spread of infection and restore the healthy portion of the tooth.
Without a root canal, the tooth would eventually become irreparable and need to be extracted. Missing teeth can lead to complex dental issues that may be difficult, time-consuming, and potentially costly to repair. So, saving the tooth with a root canal is always preferable if possible.
Patients usually experience little discomfort during root canal treatment, especially once any infection or nerve irritation has been treated. With proper care, most teeth that undergo root canal therapy can last a lifetime.
The Root Canal Procedure
Your dentist will start by numbing the area and making a small opening in the tooth. They’ll remove any infected tissue, clean and shape the inner chamber, and rinse it thoroughly.
Once cleaned, the space is filled with a medicated material and sealed with a temporary filling.
After your tooth has had a few weeks to heal, your dentist will place a crown on it to help protect it from further damage.
