Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of clear, custom-fitted aligners designed to straighten your teeth without the use of metal wires or brackets.
During your consultation, we will use the information from 3D imaging technology to create a treatment plan based on your unique smile.
A series of custom clear aligners will then be created to fit your teeth precisely at each stage of the Invisalign treatment process.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign clear plastic aligners are designed to move your teeth in tiny increments as your treatment progresses. You will wear the aligners as outlined in your treatment plan, changing to the next set every two weeks or so.
This process will continue until your teeth are in their ideal positions. The length of your Invisalign treatment will be determined by your dentist based on your specific needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
The duration of your treatment using Invisalign clear aligners will depend on your specific needs.
Factors that may determine the duration of your treatment include the misalignment of your teeth or jaw, the shape of your bite, and the amount of movement required to correct the problem.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are free of BPAs and made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular-weight polyurethane resins.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Clear aligners have the benefit of not needing to be tightened or adjusted. You just switch to a new set of aligners as outlined by your dentist. They will schedule brief appointments with you approximately every four to six weeks as needed.
These appointments give your dentist the opportunity to review your progress and general oral health, answer your questions, and adjust your treatment as required.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
Some of the main features of Invisalign include:
- A discreet, low-profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- Do not require adjustment appointments
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost will depend on the severity of your case and the duration of your treatment. In cases where the orthodontic issue is more complex, treatment may take longer and require more sets of aligners. This may affect the overall cost.
In many cases, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to that of traditional orthodontic treatment (braces).
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Many patients find that Invisalign treatment fits seamlessly into their everyday life.
You will take your aligners out whenever you need to eat, drink, brush and floss. This means that there are no additional dietary restrictions, and you'll be able to brush and floss thoroughly and consistently.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
Invisalign aligners are removable, and you will need to take them out to eat or drink anything other than water. As a result, there are no additional dietary restrictions with Invisalign, so you can continue to eat all the foods you love!
To prevent staining your clear aligners and potentially damaging your teeth, we suggest taking out the aligners when consuming any beverages (aside from water).
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
The number of aligners that you will need will depend on your condition and treatment plan.
Your dentist can give you an accurate estimate of how many aligners you will need based on a careful evaluation of your tooth position during an initial consultation.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign.
More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, thanks to the introduction of alternatives like Invisalign.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has developed a line of aligners specifically designed to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners feature compliance indicators (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn enough) to help teens monitor and stay on track with their treatment.
They also come with eruption tabs that provide space for second molars and help prevent them from growing in crooked.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Generally, most patients follow a plan that includes changing out the aligners every two weeks. However, your dentist will tell you exactly how often you should switch out your aligners.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
- Rinse your aligners every time you take them out to wash away dry saliva and plaque that can lead to dental decay and bad breath.
- Soak your clear aligners using a denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, and/or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals.
- Brush and floss your teeth before you put your aligners back in. Good oral hygiene is key to maintaining healthy teeth and helping to avoid cavities and decay. Not brushing and flossing effectively can allow food particles and bacteria to get stuck between your teeth and aligners, increasing the possibility of dental issues and foul breath.
- Clean your aligners with clear antibacterial soap. This is an inexpensive way to keep your aligners clear, fresh, and free from harmful bacteria.
- Brush your aligners gently to not scratch them, and then rinse off the soap. Then you're done!
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Because Invisalign clear aligners are removable, you will be able to take them out whenever you play sports.
However, remember that Invisalign aligners must be kept in for a minimum of 22 hours a day, so plan your time carefully.
It is also recommended that you invest in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth, as orthodontic treatment can cause your teeth to loosen slightly as they shift into their new positions, and this can make them more susceptible to damage.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! Just take out your aligners if you need to practise playing your instrument, and put them back in when you're finished.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners will come with a case, and this is where you should put your aligners whenever you take them out to help keep them safe. Be sure not to leave them anywhere that they could get too hot, which can cause the plastic to warp.
