The Third molars usually referred to as wisdom teeth, and are located at the back of the mouth near the entrance to the throat. The term “wisdom” has come from the idea that the molars surface at a time naturally associated with improved maturity or “wisdom”.

Sometimes due to the small size of the jaw or insufficient space in the mouth does not allow the wisdom teeth to erupt appropriately and become fully functional. When this happens, the tooth can impact an undesirable or possibly harmful position. If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can contribute to contamination of bacteria, resulting in damage to other teeth.

Reasons to remove wisdom teeth

There are a few reasons which can lead to the removal of wisdom teeth such as:

  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • A cyst and tumour in the areas surrounding impacted wisdom teeth
  • Bacteria and food can become accumulated under the gum tissue, resulting in an infection
  • Severe teeth Crowding
  • Accident

Wisdom teeth examination

The dentist at Shelburne Smile Centre will initially conduct a thorough examination of your wisdom and surrounding teeth. A Panoramic or digital x-ray will be taken in to evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth or the presence of any significant findings. Only after a thorough examination the dentist will plan your treatment while explaining everything to you.

What is the process of wisdom teeth removal?

The removal of wisdom teeth is a common dental procedure, generally completed under local anaesthesia, intravenous (IV) sedation, or general anaesthesia by a specially trained dental surgeon. It does not require an overnight stay. If the tooth is impacted underneath the gums the dentist will surgically expose the tooth by opening the gum tissue.

Often, the removal of wisdom teeth is an easy, uncomplicated procedure. Though, occasionally the teeth are significantly attached in the jawbone and require to be cut into pieces for extraction.

After the wisdom teeth have been removed, the site of extraction will be stitched together with an absorbable material and a provisional gauze will be placed.

Post-Extraction instructions

After the completion of the procedure, the dentist will provide you with verbal and handwritten instructions. You can expect the following after extraction of a wisdom tooth:

  • Swelling and discomfort for a few days
  • Use mouthwashes and saline water gargle to speed up healing.
  • Normal painkillers use to control post-extraction pain
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for a day

The dentist will possibly want to see you again about a week later to check the healing process and remove the stitches. To learn more about the wisdom teeth call us or use the online booking tool to get an appointment with the dentist.
